The Voices of Prahran announce our Community Independent Candidate, Janine Hendry

Janine’s statement:

As your community independent I am free to fight for you, the people of Prahan; beyond the two-party system.
I seek to represent a sensible  centre path for the people of Prahran. Prahran is a diverse electorate and everyone’s voice matters. I will be the voice of reason in our parliament.

A career in academia means I understand, and value evidenced based solutions.

My life experiences mean that I understand the importance of compassion and that good policy must always be underpinned by equality. I know too that people have the right to be heard. That everyone’s voice matters, and where people are unable to advocate for themselves then I will advocate for them.

I know that Prahran voters see climate change as critical, but that we also care deeply about social issues such as homelessness. High on our list of priorities is what has been described as the decay of our built environment, the decline in amenity. We’re just are not feeling as safe as we once did. Young women are scared to head out at tonight by themselves and increasingly homelessness and issues around drugs and alcohol are causing great sadness to the Prahran community.

It is clear to me that many in our electorate are feeling let down by the parties who were voted in to represent us, me included.

As a socially progressive electorate, we do have a deep compassion for others but want to once again feel safe in our community. We’re anxious about over development and the impact on amenity of our electorate.

As an advocate of women’s rights and equality I see that we need more urgent action to end to violence against women, and at a State level much can be done around housing, health and education. Reducing inequality, particularly around the impacts of cost of living benefits us all. But we also need greater oversight on both under and over development in Prahran so that our built environment is safe for residents and visitors.

Most importantly I will fight for you, the people of Prahran. I will and can hold the major parties to account because I am free to fight for you.
So, I bring to you a long history of speaking truth to power, a long history of listening to those who have been silenced, and a long history of fighting for change. Voting me is a vote for change and a vote that brings back the power to our community.
